The Antique Dining Set

This client came to me with a number of beautiful but dark pieces of antique furniture which made their dining room feel a little heavy.

They had seen, loved and purchased the ‘everybody leaves’ dining chairs on display in Claire Langley, Stamford. The table needed to work alongside the chairs, and an antique settle which was also to be painted.

We created a decorative palette for the room that felt bold, interesting and cohesive but not ultra-coordinated. This table was a good, solid piece of antique furniture and, as happens, was starting to look a little tired and needed a lift.

As we stripped back the layers of varnish and stain, we fell in love with the wood beneath. We were able to keep the table top natural, well finished with many layers of wax, and concentrate on decoratively painting the legs. The client was keen to see some greenery on the table. We used this motif sparingly to bring together the decorative scheme, keeping the rest of the design simple, elegant and complementary to the overarching aesthetic of the room.
